Robert O’Connell comes to Westwood from Ridge View.
BLYTHEWOOD – Westwood High School announced on Wednesday that Robert O’Connell will be the Redhawks’ new head football coach, effective July 1, 2022.
O’Connell succeeds three-year coach Matt Quinn, who accepted
the head football position at North Augusta High School.
“I could not be more excited to join a school and community with the commitment to excellence, rich traditions, and unrivaled pride and passion of Westwood High School,” O’Connell said in a press release on Wednesday.
“I am fully committed to teaching, developing and graduating elite student-athletes, winning championships and working together with our administration, parents, and community to make Westwood the premier location for high school football in the country. Our potential is unlimited, and I cannot wait to get started,” he stated.
“Coach O’Connell is a winner, in every sense of the word,”
Principal Robert Jackson said in the press release. “He is known for his
character, humility, work ethic, skill set and passion for education… it’s easy
to see why he’s right sized for Westwood High School.”
O’Connell currently serves as the Defensive Coordinator,
Assistant Head Coach and Assistant Athletic Director at Ridge View High School.
Previously, O’Connell served as head coach at Richard Winn Academy in Winnsboro where his 2016 team ended the season just two wins short of a state title. Following his stint at with the Eagles, O’Connell served as Offensive Coordinator at Irmo High School, Defensive Coordinator at Wilson High School and a defensive assistant at Wofford College.
O’Connell holds a bachelor’s degree in General Studies from
Charter Oak State College and holds a South Carolina teaching certificate for
Social Studies (grades 9-12). He is married to India O’Connell and they have
one son, RJ.
BLYTHEWOOD – The Westwood boys basketball team’s 49-40
victory over Dreher Friday night may not have looked pretty, but the Redhawks
defense showed out and closed out the team’s third-straight Region 4-4A victory
on Senior Night at the Castle.

“It was a great win for us on Senior night to send out our
six seniors with a win,” Head coach John Combs said. “Any time you can get two
wins over a region team, and two wins over Dreher, that’s a good thing.”
Seniors Bryson Felder, Jaylin McDuffie, Taukedrick King,
Colin Evans, Amarion Evans, and Khalil Donald; Westwood girls player Thamia
Davis; and senior cheerleaders were honored at midcourt between the girls and
boys game.
Bryson Felder scored 18 points and had 11 rebounds to lead
Westwood. Jaylin McDuffie had 13 points and six rebounds, and Arden Conyers had
10 points.
Just 15 shots fell for Westwood (10-13, 5-4), but seven of
them were 3-pointers. Felder, McDuffie and Conyers made two apiece and T.J.
Bell made one. The Redhawks shot 15-for-37, or 40.5 percent.
Those numbers don’t sound like much, but compared to
Dreher’s 17-for-56, or 30.3 percent shooting, Westwood scored all that it
needed to seal the win over the Blue Devils (9-9, 3-5).
“It certainly was a difficult game because Dreher plays all
zone,” Combs said. “Give them credit, they adjusted their zone.”
Combs noted that when Westwood beat the Blue Devils 60-40
Jan. 14, they played mostly a 2-3 zone, but Friday night they reversed the
look, going 3-2 and frustrating the Redhawks’ looks to the basket around the
3-point line.
“We had to make some adjustments to some things that we did,
and we were fortunate to make some shots and get enough defensive stops,” Combs
said. “Anytime you go and hold a team to 11 points in the first half, your
defense is pretty good.”
Westwood even held the Blue Devils to just four points in
the first quarter. The Redhawks got on the scoreboard when Felder made a basket
and followed up with a 3-pointer. He then got a putback and McDuffie added a
basket to close out the quarter.
Those nine points were all the Redhawks needed to begin
pinning down Dreher. They outscored the Blue Devils 11-7 in the second quarter
for a 20-11 halftime lead.
The Redhwaks never relinquished the lead, keeping Dreher at
least six points behind throughout the second half. Westwood outrebounded the
Blue Devils 33-26, which isn’t a great margin except that Dreher got just seven
boards—five defensive and two offensive—in the second half.
“Rebounding was something that we preached to our team that we had to get better at,” Combs said. “We are better now than we were at the beginning of the year and that’s what we shoot for, we continue to grow as a team and continue to get better.”
Westwood fell 74-66 at Irmo Tuesday night. The Redhawks trailed the Yellow Jackets just 30-27 at halftime, but Irmo (20-4, 7-1) outscored them 22-10 in the third and took a 52-37 lead into the third quarter. Even though the Redhawks scored 29 points in the final stanza, Irmo scored just enough to seal the win.
Westwood concludes region play at Richland Northeast Friday. A win over the Cavaliers (9-9, 4-5) can secure third place for the Redhawks, behind Irmo an A.C. Flora.
Jessica Woods (0) goes in for a layup. Woods scored a team-high 19 points in the win over Dreher.
In the girls game, Westwood (17-6, 9-0) outscored Dreher
(4-6, 4-3) 34-16 in the first half and cruised to a 59-36 victory to claim the
team’s fifth straight region championship.
“I thought we executed well. We knew they were tough,
physical, and well-coached and we knew that they weren’t going away regardless
of what’s on the scoreboard,” Westwood head coach Gregory Bauldrick said. “I
thought we held our own, did a lot of good things. We had some internal
miscues, but that comes with the game.”
Jessica Woods scored a game-high 19 points, and Raven
Johnson and Korletta Daniels put up 17 points apiece. The only other Westwood
scorer was Makiah Thompson, who had six points.
Westwood defeated Irmo 66-38 Tuesday. Jessica Woods led all
scorers with 22 points. Raven Johnson added 12 points.
The Westwood girls travel to Richland Northeast Friday.
WINNSBORO – There was little rest for Richard Winn’s basketball players, coaches, and fans in the regular season homestretch. The Eagle teams, competing in four region contests since Feb. 2, have only one big contest remaining on Wed., Feb. 9, before region tourney contests begin.
The Lady Eagles succumbed to three of their last four opponents, but picked up a big region home win against the visiting Cambridge Cougars on Senior Night, Feb. 4. On the other hand, RW’s varsity boys captured three wins and suffered just one loss to be neck and neck with King for the regular season region title. That title will be determined on Richard Winn’s home court on Wednesday, following the press deadline.

Laurens
Richard Winn hosted the Laurens Academy Lady Crusaders on
Feb. 2. While the Lady Eagles matched the visitors point for pint in the second
half, the Laurens opponents were able to hang onto their 12 point first half
lead to capture the road region victory, 40-28.
Mikaela Miller led the Lady Eagles scoring with 13 points.
Teammates also posting points included Abby Lewis – 5, Delaney Young – 5,
Brinson Baker – 2, Meagan Brigman – 2, and Emma Steed – 1.
Wardlaw
RWA got back on the court the next night after making the
road trip to Johnston on Feb. 3 to rematch against a strong squad of Lady
Patriots. The Lady Eagles kept the game close in the first half, trailing the
Wardlaw team by only 3 points at the half, 16-19. Wardlaw increased their lead
by 7 in the third quarter. That lead proved to be the difference as both teams
matched up evenly with 18 points in the final quarter, leaving the visiting
Winnsboro team with a 7 point deficit and another region loss, 40-47.
Young, one of the team’s four sophomores, topped the Lady
Eagles’ scoring stats with 15 points. Miller followed with 12 points, all
scored from the free throw line while shooting 75% at the charity stripe. Lewis
– 6, Baker – 3, Steed – 2, and Brigman – 2.
Cambridge
The Richard Winn teams returned to the home nest on Feb. 4
to rematch against the Cambridge Cougars. After a deadlocked 4-4 first quarter,
the Lady Eagles outscored their opponents by 3 in the second quarter to take a
12-9 lead into the locker room at halftime.
When play resumed, the Lady Cougars successfully employed a
full court press throughout the third quarter and forced the Lady Eagles to make
numerous turnovers. With Miller benched with foul trouble for the entire third
quarter and part of the fourth, Richard Winn was still able to stay in the mix
and keep Cambridge at bay by two. The Lady Eagles went into the final period
with a narrow lead, 20-18.
Both teams battled hard to the nail-biting end, and just
when it seemed as if the game could swing in either team’s favor, Lewis swished
a 3-point basket and made a free throw late in the game. Midway through the
last quarter, Miller got back into the game and hit 4-for-4 clutch free throws
in the last minute to help seal the 32-29 victory and avenge the earlier loss
to Cambridge.
Newberry
On Feb. 7 Richard Winn traveled to Newberry for their second
regular season matchup against the NA Eagles. The Newberry Academy girls’ squad
again proved themselves the superior Eagles with a decisive 57-32 victory.
Coach Emily McElveen’s Richard Winn girls played a strong 16 point third
quarter, but the 19 point halftime deficit (8-27) was too great to overcome.
This time it was RWA 8th grader Abby Lewis who carried the
Lady Eagles offensively. Lewis was scoreless in the first half but came on
strong to nail four 3-pointers in the third period and end the game with 16
total points. Young – 7, Miller – 6,
Brigman – 3.
The Lady Eagles go into the final regular season region contest against King hoping to improve on their 2-8 region record and 6-9 overall record.
Richard Winn Boys v. Laurens
Miller Stuck (11) lays one up against Cambridge. | Martha Ladd
Coach Nick Chaisson’s boys’ team countered the girls’ record
over these last four games and earned three victories while going down in
defeat to Laurens by one point, 34-35.
The Eagles had previously beaten the Crusaders in Laurens,
but the visitors arrived at the Eagles Nest more determined and with a better
game plan. Lawson Wade, averaging just over 15 points per game, was held in
check to 5 total points. Teammate Landon Caulder stepped up his game to lead
the Eagles in rebounds and steals and tied Miller Stuck as the Eagle’s leading
scorers with 9 each. Jacob Chaisson – 8, Drew Spires – 3, and Rob Wilson lead
the assist category with 4.The team had 5 players to record blocked shots –
Wade, Wilson, Caulder, Stuck, and Ethan Steward.
Wardlaw
The Eagles bounced back big the next day as they faced the
Wardlaw Patriots in Johnston. Still feeling the bitter sting of the night
before’s narrow loss, the Eagles jumped out ahead to lead 21-6 in the first
quarter and then added 31 more points in the second to lead 52-11 at the half.
Ten Eagle players posted points in the scorebook as the team cruised to a
lopsided 70-29 victory.
Wade lit up the scoreboard with 22 points and collected 5
rebounds and had 2 blocks. Spires followed Wade with 9 points. Stuck and Wilson
tied with 4 assists and joined Kitt Nicholson and Ethan Steward to record 6
points each. Caulder and Travis Bonds tallied 5 apiece, and Chaisson and
Charlie Bonds added 3 and 2 points respectively.
Cambridge
The Eagles got back-to-back night victories; the next one
was played at home against Cambridge, 57-33. Prior to the varsity boys’ game,
lone Lady Eagle senior Mikaela Miller and solo Eagle senior Edward Clement were
recognized during a Senior Night ceremony. The two players were escorted onto
the court by their parents.
Eagle fans were treated to two particular crowd-igniting
events during the Senior Night contest. The first occurred when Wade slam
dunked in the first half, and then, with seconds left on the clock in the final
period, Clement nailed a 3-pointer from the far right corner. Both baskets
brought the crowd to their feet cheering.
Stuck had the hot hand for the Eagles with 19 points and led
the steals (3) and blocks (1) stats. Wade recorded 15 points and team high 12 rebounds.
Spires had 5 assists and 6 points. Caulder – 10, Clement – 5, and Chaisson – 2.
Newberry
The road trip to Newberry on Monday brought more good
results for Chaisson’s Eagle team with a 41-21 victory. This time Caulder led
the scoring with 13 points and rebounds with 6. Wade followed with 12 points
and 5 blocks. Spires added 9 points and led with 4 assists. Stuck – 4, Steward
– 2, and Chaisson -1. Wilson had 4 steals.
The three game win streak boosts the Eagles’ region record
to 10-2 and overall to 16-5. Wednesday night’s results against King will
determine who will be seeded #1 going into the region tournament this weekend.
The Eagles only two region losses to King and Laurens were by narrow 1 point
margins.

WINNSBORO – Both Richard Winn varsity teams started the new year off with a bang with rather lopsided victories in a region match up against Anderson Christian. The Eagles hosted the Lions on Friday, January 7, in their first competition following Christmas break.
Behind the hot shooting of senior Mikaela Miller who led her
team in the scoring column with 18 points, there were four other teammates who
put up double digits for the Eagles as they cruised to the 65-19 victory.
First year head coach Emily McElveen guided her varsity
girls to their fifth win of the season against only one loss (5-1) so far and
their first region win (1-0).
“This has been a very tough season with having only 6 or 7
players each game,” McElveen said, “but I am proud of how hard my girls have
worked thus far and the dedication that they have shown day in and day out at
practice. I am excited to see how they continue to work together to be
successful when the odds are against them.”
What the Lady Eagles lack in numbers (players), they make up
for with their teamwork, aggressive style of play, and hustle on the court.
Richard Winn held the visitors scoreless in the second
quarter to command the half time lead going into the locker room, 32-7. The
Lady Eagles led 29-7 with under 3 minutes left in the first half when Miller
knocked down two back-to-back three’s just before the half ended. She scored 14
of her 18 total in first half action.
Anderson Christian’s Mary Green opened up the third quarter
with a 3-pointer, but the Lady Lions would only score one more 2-point basket
in the quarter. RWA got balanced scoring in the third quarter from five
players. Delaney Young nailed a 3-pointer just before the buzzer sounded to put
the Lady Eagles up 47-12 going into the final 8-minute period.
Richard Winn went on to tally 18 more points in the final
quarter to put the game far out of reach for the opponents.
Eighth grader Abby Lewis scored 14 points behind Miller’s
game high of 18. Emma Steed tallied 12 points and 10 rebounds while teammate
Brinson Baker pulled down 13 rebounds and added 11 points. Young rounded out
the scoring with 10 points and snagged 6 rebounds. Miller also grabbed 10
rebounds and led the team with 5 assists.

Richard Winn Boys
Richard Winn’s varsity boys controlled the opening tip off against the Anderson Christian Lions and went on to put up 8 unanswered points in the first two minutes of play to swing the early tempo in favor of the home squad.
Coach Nick Chaisson’s Eagles capitalized on their team’s
height advantage, speed, and shooting skills, particularly of junior Lawson
Wade, who single handedly posted 12 points in the first quarter and 11 more in
the second period to help put his team up 44-16 at the half. Sophomore Drew
Spires also added a double digit total of 10 points to the Eagles’ first half
lead. Much of the second half was played with a running clock.
Throughout the game, the Eagles continued to dominate both
the offensive and defensive game and racked up 67 points total to their
opponents’ 27,
The RWA varsity boys improved their overall record to 8-3
and 2-0 in region action. Wade scored the game high 28 points and was followed
by Spires with 16. Landon Caulder posted 9 points, Rob Wilson had 6, Jacob
Chaisson and Wade also led the team in the rebound (8) category and tied Wilson
with 5 assists apiece. Spires had the most steals (5) and was followed by
Wilson and Caulder with 3 each.
Due to
Covid, the games scheduled for this week have been postponed, and it is
uncertain at this time when these games will be made up and the season will
resume.
The Fairfield Central boys team at the state meet.
COLUMBIA – In no surprising feat, senior Griffin Joshua Mosley crossed the finish line first for Fairfield Central last Friday at the South Carolina High School League’s 3A State meet. Mosley finished in ninth place for an All-State (top 10) finish with a time of 17:24.63.

Hank White
Eighth grader Nygel Woodard finished second for the Griffins
and in 43rd place of the 113 runners with an 18:42.99 finish. Freshman Hank
White followed in 68th place at 19:27.98. Eighth grader Sidney Wilson and
sophomore Rylan Woodard also finished under 20 minutes. Wilson finished at
19:47.31 for 78th place, a personal best, and Woodard finished at 19:56.34 for
the 80 spot. Sophomore Malachi Woodard
rounded out the Griffins’ times at 21:07.48.
Mosley’s experience combined with tenaciousness of young talent catapulted the Griffins into their first region finish in program history this year.
BLYTHEWOOD – Playing at home for the first time in a year, Westwood led York 8-6 at halftime, but the Cougars rallied for two touchdowns in the fourth quarter for a 19-8 victory over the Redhawks in a non-region game at Westwood.
Julian Milligan put the Redhawks on the scoreboard with a
6-yard touchdown run, and Camren Brown passed to Jordan Jenkins to add the
2-point conversion that gave the Redhawks an 8-6 lead midway through the second
quarter.
Frank Thompson scored from six yards out to put the Cougars
up 12-6 with five minutes left in the game. York then recovered a Westwood
fumble and converted it to another Thompson touchdown, from three yards out,
with three minutes to play.
Milligan had 87 yards on 23 carries and a score to lead the
Redhawks.

The Bengals take the field for their 2021 home opener.
BLYTHEWOOD – Desmond Boatwright blasted through Fairfield Central defenders Monday night. Backup quarterback David Herndon had enough touch on the ball to throw three touchdown passes. Together, they and the rest of the Blythewood football team closed out a 22-6 victory over 3A rival Fairfield Central Monday night.
Boatwright had 169 yards on 22 carries on the night. Herndon
started in lieu of sophomore Harrison Collins, who broke his hand before the
season opener. The 6-0 junior threw TD passes of 6, 30, and 23 yards, along
with a 2-point conversion pass in the first half to give the Bengals a 20-0
halftime lead.
“I’ve got to give our O-line credit and Desmond did a great
job,” Blythewood head coach Jason Seidel said. “We left some points off the
board though, and you have to give Fairfield credit, we had some drives but we
shot ourselves in the foot. It was a typical first game.”
Herndon coming in on short notice was a concern going in,
but the signal caller relied on receivers Jake Parker, Josh Gray, and Johnathan
Harper to take in touchdown passes and give Blythewood a good cushion going
into the second half.
“I was proud of him,” Seidel said. “It’s gonna take some time. He’ll miss a couple of plays here and there because he’s still learning the signals, but it happens.”
Fairfield defenders take down the Bengal runner. | Photos: Anthony Montgomery
For the Griffins, who had seen their fall practice
practically erased by COVID, came in without the pleasure of having scrimmaged
opponents in the preseason. That lack of practice showed, head coach Demetrius
Davis said.
“The one thing we couldn’t afford to do we did,” he said. “I
was hoping we would be able to come through and even if it was the first time
we went live, be able to overcome some of the mistakes. Playing a team of this
caliber in your first game you’ve got to be able to come out and play
mistake-free and create some turnovers. And we couldn’t get that done.”
The Bengals defense limited the Griffins to 160 total yards
on the night, 87 rushing and 73 passing.
“Our defense was great, and I love the special teams,”
Seidel said. “Our punter (Will Rowe, three punts and a 47.0 average on the
night) did a great job of changing field position.”
Blythewood turned the ball over on downs deep into Fairfield
Central territory on its first drive. The Bengals second drive paid off as they
ground out the clock with Boatwright runs and scored on Herndon’s 6-yard
touchdown pass to Parker with 18 seconds left in the first quarter.
Up 6-0, the Bengals defense made a key stop. Fairfield Central went backwards on the next possession, punting from the15-yard line and setting up Blythewood at the Griffins’ 30-yard line. Three plays later Herndon struck again with a 30-yard touchdown strike to Gary at the 10:41 mark.
Herndon’s third TD pass of the half came with 4:38 left as
he found Harper from 23 yards out. After having missed an extra point and
failed on a 2-point conversion on its first scores, Herndon made good on the
third attempt, a pass to Chris Thomas for two points to give Blythewood a 20-0
lead at halftime.
Blythewood spent the third quarter running the clock out on
Boatwright runs, then pinning Fairfield Central back deep in its own territory.
Doing so led to a safety when Jordan Clark tackled Tyderian Grier in the end
zone at the 9:03 mark of the fourth.
Fairfield Central finally managed a small drive in the final
minutes of the game, an 11-play 40-yarder capped with Semaj Young’s 2-yard TD
run with 20 seconds left.
“I feel like we won the second half,” Davis said. We did a
better job in the second half than in the first one. Our defense pretty much
shut them out. We did some good things on defense, and the only points they got
was on that safety, and that was on me, that wasn’t a great call.”
Blythewood travels to Westwood for the latest Battle of the
Woods—and the right to wield the Jeanne Schmidt Memorial Trophy Friday.
Covid-19 forced last year’s meeting to be cancelled. Westwood beat Blythewood
14-7 in the rivalry in 2019.
“It’s a quick turnaround,” Seidel said. “We’ve got to make
sure we’re ready to go. This happened to us two years ago, we played on a
Monday and went to Westwood and lost. A lot of our kids remember that.”
Fairfield Central plays host to Lancaster Monday night.
“A team makes the best strides between week one and week two,
so hopefully we can get this film,” Davis said. “This is the first chance we’ve
been able to go up against some guys. Hopefully we’ll do better next week.”

against Great Falls High School. The Great Falls volleyball program is in its
first year.
Lila Smith attacks from right side. | Millie Lambert
The Eagles effortlessly took the first set against a new Great Falls team. Senior Mikaela Miller served eleven points to clinch the 25-6 win.
Great Falls found some footing in game two. Tied at 8 after
four rotations, Eagle junior Maggie Hughes served 11 points in a row to give
Richard Winn a 20-8 lead. The Eagles closed out game 2 with a 25-12 final.
With momentum on their side, Richard Winn dominated the
third set 25-3 for a 3-0 win over the Red Devils.
Sophomore Lila Smith got the Eagles off to an early 5-1
lead. Brinson Baker served 8 points and Meagan Brigman closed out the game at
the service line with the final 10 points.
Miller had 6 aces on the night. Smith, Baker and Hughes had
4 aces each. Brigman tallied 3.
Richard Winn got its first taste of 2021 action last
Thursday in Rock Hill against York Prep.
The Eagles fell 25-27 in the first set, but recovered for a
25-16 win in the second and took set three 25-17. York Prep won a decisive
fourth set 25-14 to send the match to a fifth, where the Eagles came up short
14-16.
Richard Winn replaces the 7 seniors who graduated from the
2020 team. With only three returning players, the Eagles look to develop as the
season progresses.
They’re set to face off with one of their toughest opponents
on Thursday – defending Region and State champion Newberry Academy.
Larry Perry played shortstop for the SC Braves. | Martha Ladd
WINNSBORO – Fairfield Central recently announced that alum Larry Perry will be the next head baseball coach for the Griffins.
“Coach Perry comes to us with a wealth of baseball
knowledge,” Fairfield Central’s announcement said.
Perry
Perry, a 2007 graduate, was a baseball standout for the Griffins and played travel ball with the SC Braves, a team loaded with Midlands baseball talent. The Braves played in USSSA and Triple Crown tournaments.
After high school, Perry played for two seasons at USC
Sumter before moving on to finish his collegiate career as a USC Beaufort Sand
Shark.
In his final year as a USCS Fire Ant, Perry batted .351 in
49 games played. He had 53 hits, 10 doubles, three home runs and 31 RBIs in 151
at bats. Perry’s fielding percentage was .957 with 27 putouts, 52 assists and
only 4 errors, helping the team to a 47-7 record.
In the 2010 season at USCB, Perry was named 2nd Team
All-Conference. Perry’s statistics remain in the record books at USCB. His
single-season batting average of .392 and 53 runs are each sixth best in school
history. Perry is one of only three Sand Sharks to hit two triples in a game.
Perry’s on-base percentage of .422 remains in the top 15 of USCB players. He is
third-best in single-season stolen bases with 21. His 29 career stolen bases at
USCB is sixth best in program history.
Perry returned to Winnsboro and has worked as an Athletic
Specialist with the Fairfield County Parks and Recreation Department.
“This is truly a blessing,” Perry said in a statement on
Facebook. “Dr. Swilley and Coach Roach thank you for the opportunity, it feels
good to be home!”
HOPKINS – Last Friday’s Track and Field championships may not have been the finish that the Griffins’ wanted, but it was a good one nonetheless. Sharmelle Holmes, Tamerra English and Joshua Mosley represented Fairfield Central in their respective events last Friday at the SC High School League AAA State Championships.
Sharmelle Holmes
Holmes took home second place in the 200 meter dash with a time of 25.41. Ja’Lencia Griffin of Manning took first place at 25.14. Holmes also finished fourth in the 100m dash with a time of 12.48. Griffin also took first at 12.33.
Joshua Mosley finished fourth for Fairfield in the 3200
meter run finals with a 9:53.66 finish, a new personal best for him.
Pendleton’s Ronan O’Neill finished first in the event at 9:35.39.
Tamerra English finished seventh in javelin at 70-08.00.
Bishop England’s Hope-Elaine Stowell took first place.
The Griffin girls team finished second in the region this season.
