  • BW man arrested for grand larceny in Ridgeway

RIDGEWAY – A Blythewood man has been charged with grand larceny, theft of alcohol valued at more than $60,000 from a beverage distributor on Highway 34 in Ridgeway.

    McGoogan

Neil Daniel McGoogan III was arrested on Feb. 15, 2018 after the management of the beverage distributor where McGoogan worked began looking into a large inventory loss, according to sheriff’s deputies.

After multiple system checks, the company’s management observed McGoogan’s gate used at unauthorized times. The video system showed the suspect exiting and re-entering the gated facility on a golf cart and then in later videos, after other employees had left work, the suspect’s truck showed up on the video, the incident report stated.

The report stated that an inside video captured the suspect loading a pallet with cases of Ciroc and Crown Royal liquor and then entering the ‘cool’ room and exiting with the pallet wrapped in foil blankets that the company uses to wrap temperature sensitive products.

The suspect then placed the pallet on the shrink wrap stand, wrapped the pallet, and moved the pallet outside the building, the report stated.

According to the report, the suspect is then seen exiting the facility with the pallet in the back of his truck. Deputies reported that these events occurred between Nov. 8, 2017 and January 16, 2018.

The sheriff’s department is still investigating whether additional dates are involved in the heists. McGoogan was released on a $500 bond.

  • Shootout ends with attempted murder

WINNSBORO – A wild-west drive-by shoot ‘em up that occurred around 8 p.m. Monday, Feb. 5, on Columbia Road behind the Bi-Lo Shopping Center, ended with a gunshot victim and three arrests, two of them for attempted murder.

According to the incident report, three men in a Buick Park Avenue on Highway 321 Bypass suspected that an older model, light-colored Buick had begun following them from the EXXON station on Highway 321.

    Geiger

A 17-year-old, one of two male passengers in the Park Avenue, stated that the driver of that car, Tykavious Sampson, 24, turned into the Deerwood Apartment complex in Winnsboro to determine if the older Buick was, indeed, following them. The Park Avenue turned back onto Highway 321 Bypass, then into the Bi-Lo Shopping Center parking lot and then on to Columbia Road. The older Buick followed, according to witnesses.

A witness who spoke with Sheriff’s deputies in the BI-LO parking lot following the incident, reported that the older Buick then pulled alongside the Park Avenue while on Columbia Road.  An occupant in the older Buick opened fire with a handgun on the occupants of the Park Avenue, which suddenly braked after the shots were fired. Different witnesses reported hearing three to five shots.

Sampson sustained a gunshot wound in the side according to the incident report.

The second passenger in the Park Avenue, Gregory Alexander Javins, who was riding in the back seat, said the older Buick then sped off towards Highway 321 By-Pass.

The witness in the parking lot stated that a person got out of the Park Avenue and ran behind the BI-LO Shopping Center and then to the BI-LO, the incident report stated.  Deputies stated they later found a 22-caliber rifle behind the BI-LO believed to belong to the occupants of the Park Avenue.

The Fairfield County Sheriff’s Department was able to obtain a photo of both vehicles from security cameras as they passed by the front door of the BI-LO.

Marshawn Devon Geiger, 19; Anthony Leo Green, Jr., 20; and Jawine William Ivery, 22, all believed to be occupants in the older Buick, were arrested on Feb. 6. Geiger has multiple charges including attempted murder. He was denied bond and remains in the Fairfield County Detention Center.

Green was also charged with attempted murder and was released on a $20,000 surety bond.

Ivery was charged with misprision (neglect to report a crime) and released on a $5,000 personal recognizance bond. According to the Fairfield County Sheriff’s Department, the shooting is still under investigation.

  • Routine checkpoint becomes high speed chase

RIDGEWAY – A high speed chase that began in Ridgeway, ended on Garner’s Ferry Road and reached 123 miles per hour, resulted in attempted murder charges for Michael Odell Lewis, 24, of Columbia.

    Lewis

The incident began during an early evening traffic safety check conducted by the Fairfield County Sheriff’s Department at the intersection of Syrup Mill Road and Peach Road on Jan. 26, when a blue Hyundai Elantra pulled up to the check point.

Deputy Amber Shults reported immediately smelling the odor of an alcoholic beverage and what appeared to be marijuana coming from the vehicle. Shults said she observed an open container of liquor in the center console and a small scale on the driver’s lap.

When the driver was asked to turn off the vehicle, he complied, then turned the engine back on and accelerated at a high rate of speed towards another deputy who was standing in the roadway speaking with the driver of another vehicle, according to the report. The officer moved quickly out of the way to avoid being struck while Dep. Shultz pursued the Hyundai onto Devil’s Race Track Road then right onto Syrup Mill Road, traveling back through the safety check point area.

The Hyundai continued, reaching 90 miles per hour as it entered Richand County and turned left onto Blythewood Road, heading for Blythewood, the report stated. Turning south onto I-77, the chase was reported to reach 123 miles per hour.

Richland County deputies attempted to use stop sticks at Exit 22. The vehicle swerved toward a Richland County Deputy during the pursuit.

After leaving I-77 at Exit 9, the vehicle turned onto Garners Ferry Road and pulled into an apartment complex where the Hyundai’s front passenger side tire blew out. The suspect, later identified as Lewis, and a passenger fled on foot but were apprehended in the complex, the report stated.

Both Fairfield and Richland County officers charged Lewis with attempted murder and failure to stop for blue lights.

The passenger, Travol Robinson, 25, was charged with open container. Both were transported to Fairfield County Detention Center. Lewis was denied bond and Robinson and released on his personal recognizance.
